1956 Carrot

Just as Well

Two Legs

Beige Hands

Transitional Work.

I finished out the month of March with some more carrots. As I worked through these pieces,
I started to develop the need to 'loosen up.' Although I was quite enamored with this work--
I felt I was working in a type of 'chaos-to-order' format. I would create these drawings that were
very confusing. In a need to resolve them down to some type of 'sense,' I would fill in the
shapes that I had created in the drawings with solid colors. I was happy with the
amount of tension and semi-chaotic nature of the paintings, until they just got too tight.

That is when I arrived at the following paintings. You can see, in the 3.24.98 Series, that I am
using left over paint from the above carrot paintings. And, in the process of 'loosening up'
I have eliminated the carrot and several body parts. That is why I feel these really lead up to
the Pieces Series: comfortableness with the elimination of significant details of the figure.
However, that is just the first step. Another clear need and result was to
put energy back into the actual painting strokes.
