Work
in NYC. Well. I have been sent on another search. After The Pieces Series,
I was once again moving forward without a base. It seems to be the standard
for existence these days, so I guess it didn't seem to be that foreign. The
works that are on this page are works that parallel my move to NYC from the
safety and isolation of tiny town Michigan. The works were done amidst the
chaos of moving in to a new place that had less space, FAR more character
and the pressure of NYC just a few steps away.
All of these images are from a "forced" series type of environment, in which
I put many pieces of different-sized paper into a "container" and require
myself to work through ALL of them, in the order in which I receive them.
It is my little way of trying to take the awareness of what I am doing out
of each image. To remove planning and to deal with whatever comes next. I
guess that also parallels my approach towards life, and the work is mearly
a reflection.
Anyhow, below the images rest. None are larger than 7" x 5", and most were
done in a three piece series fashion. I actually am quite excited about many
of them. I think, because of the process and the size, I was able to do things
that I wasn't as afraid of, so I look as some of them and think
that they are quite daring, at least for me. They are "in order" of creation,
so I also think it is interesting to witness the change. Also, these are unedited,
in terms of my choice. I am giving you every one that was done so that all
can be evaluated. Works are done between August 98/January 99.
Art as catalyst for social change.
